How I Did It: Gaining a Competitive Edge by Harnessing Complexity

How can streamlining complex processes for your customers give you a competitive advantage?

By making it easier for them to do business with you rather than your competitors. In this month’s How I Did It video, Ariane Daguin, founder and CEO of D’Artagnan, explains how she built a $168 million gourmet food empire with a complex game of logistical musical chairs.

It started with selecting and developing relationships with small-scale heritage ranchers and slaughterhouses around the country and building a transportation network to deliver the freshest meat possible. But that’s just the beginning.

In order to make use of entire animals (instead of just popular cuts of meat) and keep inventory moving quickly, D’Artagnan added two new distribution channels in addition to its original restaurant sales: supermarkets and direct-to-consumer e-commerce. That strategy not only solved the problem of “selling the whole cow;” it also got the company through COVID, when restaurants shut down.
